Jordi Alba will be exposed April 1, 2004 until April 28, 2004 in the representarte art gallery of Barcelona; a series of paintings in oil.
When did your first creative anxieties began?
The first picture I Painted was in autumn of 1999. It was an assignment of the City Hall of Sant Quirze of the Valles. There was no creative anxiety, it was an assignment. I did not return to paint until a year later. An inclination of my life was the reason, for some reason, to question me, to find answers, to revise my past, of unmasked fears and resistances. It was perhaps the beginning of a change, to act, to begin to be sincere. And the nearest way and the one I better knew was the painting.
Which painters have influenced your work? By which you have special predilection? Why?
Sincerely, I believe that I have been more influenced by all those painters that I was never conscious of their influence. I believe those that influenced me, in an unconscious way, are those that I clearly refused. We look at ourselves to be reflected. But they are not the ones that influence us, because they do not question us. I am interested about what more disturbs me, because it obliges me to revise myself. Besides, I question myself if it is the work of the painter that influences or is it life.
Which is the theme that you are more pleased to express in your works?
The theme finds me, I do not find it. I do not try to force myself to paint a determined fear. I do not paint a theme because it pleases me. It arises in coherence with my states of spirit of that concrete moment of my life in which I find myself. Today can be industrial motives and tomorrow human anatomy.
Where does your inspiration originate to create your pictorial work?
I never know when I am inspired. At times I believe to be uninspired and I cannot paint anything. I am able to confuse inspiration with elation. My better moments have arisen when I have not looked for them. In the same act, the inspiration can come without knowing how or the reason. We do not have to wait for the inspiration to act.
Do you believe the mission of art is not trust the known things and to concentrate on the unknown things where the artist should try to discover a sense that is practical and immediate of our world; to cause a feeling through the emotions that the reality can be poetic?
The reality is the one that each one lives; there is not a global reality. My reality has nothing to do with the one from the others. Where someone sees poetry, another does not see it. The mission of the art is the one that you want it to give. There are those that only intend to disconnect from work for awhile in the week and there are those who intend to find a sense of art in the life.
What should be the role of the painter in the present society?
I do not know what should be the role of the painter in the present society. I do not believe that it should have a concrete role. To be a painter can be more than one profession.
You understand the painting as a commitment of the artist with their stage of life and its environment?
Although it can be and it has been, it does not have to be it. The commitment should be with you, with your sincerity.
How would you define your painting? What techniques do you use?
Suffered and endeavored. Each picture is like a labor. I spend a lot of time watching and reflecting on what I am painting or what I want to paint. The part in which I feel more comfortable is the oil on a stiff backup, generally on wood.
Jordi Alba, in the works that are exposed in representarte has tried to Express his anxiety by an idea so fantastic as the truth and its non-existence and of how it believes it to possess. In some way we can see in that television monitor series that, as a study of anatomy and physiology, show its bowels in a fatuous intent to find that unquestionable truth that it seems to possess.
